A Day in the Life of CDS

As you enter the school, the sound of children’s laughter is heard in the background and the aroma of red beans and rice drifts down the hall.

You pass a classroom and a familiar face glances up and gives you a quick wave as you make your way to your child’s classroom. You see the workplace of children where colorful creations were made by little hands and happy faces. The Spanish teacher has just begun her weekly lesson and pulls out a chair, motioning to your child to come join. You wish you had made it before the lesson started to share with her about your child’s request for “leche” with dinner. You’re barely able to grab a quick hug before your child skips off to join their class. You pause at the door, checking the parent info board to see whether Show and Tell is Thursday or Friday this week. As you’re saying your goodbyes to all the familiar faces, the teacher shares with you stories from the Petting Zoo’s visit last week. Of course, your child was the one who had to strike a pose with every single animal! As you head to your car, you exhale, knowing the feeling you have at that moment, is the reason you chose Country Day School.

Welcome to our school!

Country Day School of Baton Rouge began in 1982. It has been an active part of the Baton Rouge community for over forty years. It has nurtured, educated, and shared smiles and laughter with thousands of children in the Baton Rouge area. It is a privilege to now have our alumni enrolling their own children to share in the Country Day School experience.

CARLA SCHILD

It began with Betty Kerr and Carla Schild, mother and daughter and both educators. At the time, Betty and Carla were practicing in larger scale early childhood programs. “What if thinking” led them to dream of a smaller setting offering more hands-on learning opportunities, closer relationships, and a wide array of learning experiences… music, science discovery, outdoor adventures, creative art experiences, and books, books, and more books.

In 1990, Lisa Kirk, also an early childhood educator and a former CDS parent, joined our team as Betty retired. All three educators held close the vision our school still holds to this day…childhood is a brief window in time, passing all too quickly. It is our mission to nourish, honor, and preserve this time of wonder and joy. Yes, just watch, all too soon your caterpillar will become a butterfly.
