Our Curriculum

As you have learned, finding just the right preschool for your child is not an easy task. We hope you will come to see our program in action. We encourage you to tour our school, visit in our classrooms, and take time to talk with our directors. Ask as many questions as you like, relax, and enjoy your visit at Country Day School. It’s nice to have you join us.

Preschool should be that special place where children can grow socially, physically, emotionally, and intellectually…a place where children feel safe, learn, and have fun. Children need to explore, experiment, and make discoveries in order to make sense of their world. Our curriculum, utilized in our early childhood program from infants to pre-kindergarten, is grounded in practices that are developmentally appropriate for the children we serve. Our classrooms provide children with the opportunities to learn to share, take turns, cooperate, and solve problems. Materials and activities are designed to help children develop early reading, writing, science, art, and math skills. Our wide variety of age appropriate experiences will help establish a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning.

Our curriculum plans for the whole child. Intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and creative growth are of equal importance. Learning opportunities are provided in a secure, predictable environment, guided by a caring, nurturing teacher. Our teachers realize that each child develops at their own rate, therefore, our program respects both the age and the individual needs of each child.

At Country Day School, we work to ensure that our classrooms and our curriculum are developmentally appropriate and that the early years for the children in our care are a special and wonderful time.

Spanish with Señora Elizabeth! faq-img close-img

Country Day School feels as though it is important to include a second language opportunity in our curriculum. The children excitedly await Mrs. Elizabeth’s arrival for their weekly Spanish class. When she was in just first grade, Mrs. Elizabeth moved to Venezuela where she found her love for Spanish that she shares with us. Mrs. Elizabeth always comes to school with many fun, theme-based activities that ignite an eagerness for learning Spanish in us all. Mrs. Elizabeth tailors her lessons to seasonal themes that make for a better understanding, being that they tie in with celebrations and real-life experiences that the children are exposed to in real time. Some of the topics Mrs. Elizabeth covers in class include letters, numbers, colors, seasons, days of the week, months of the year, traditional greetings, conversations, names of family members, and vocabulary words that align with the week’s theme. The children are given multi-sensory demonstrations that include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities to cater to all types of learners. Mrs. Elizabeth uses many tools to enrich her lessons including songs, chants, visuals, manipulatives, books, and toys. She does a fantastic job of adapting Spanish to each individual child’s level. Mrs. Elizabeth instills a love for Spanish in all of us at CDS!

Music with Ms. Suzanne faq-img close-img

Country Day School includes music education in our curriculum because of its many benefits to children. Music rich environments help to strengthen the listening and verbal skills necessary for communication through spoken language. It is also beneficial in enhancing concentration skills, spatial-temporal skills, memory recall, pattern recognition skills, coordination, discipline, confidence, teamwork, stress relief, and emotional development. Ms. Suzanne is our lovely music teacher who is a professional flutist and piccolo soloist. Ms. Suzanne serves as Principle Flute at Opera Louisiane! As a Professor of Flute, she helped implement Southeastern University’s music therapy program for children with Autism. Ms. Suzanne visits us weekly to share her beautiful musical talents and to teach us all about instruments, sounds, rhythm, and harmony. We love to use our singing voices and to learn all sorts of fun songs that align with our weekly themes!

Country Day School has a S.T.E.M. enrichment program called TechStars that visits our older classes twice a month. This program offers the children opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through numerous activities. Some of these activities include learning to use the computer by playing educational computer games, coding robots, using digital microscopes, making simple machines (gears, pulleys, axles & wheels), performing science experiments, exploring magnetism, making movies, and much more! These activities allow for a memorable, hands-on learning experience that sparks an excitement for learning early on that is sure to last a lifetime!
